Dr Gary Michelson Attacking Los Angeles City and LA Animal Services

In 2005 billionaire Dr Gary Michelson started Found Animals Foundation. I was at the meeting where he stated his goal was to quickly and easily end pet overpopulation in Los Angeles using his keen intellect and money. He initially offered a $75,000,000 prize to anyone who could invent a one shot permanent cat, dog sterilant. He later offered grant money just for research toward that goal. He worked with a camera crew who was at that initial meeting to document the "miracle" he was about to perform. They were going to make a documentary about it. 21 years later and he never awarded the prize and wasn't able to end pet overpopulation in LA as he promised. No documentary either.

Yesterday Dr Gary Michelson penned an Op-Ed  piece in a small local online site called Westside Current, see link below. In the Op-Ed he attacks the City of Los Angeles and LA Mayor Karen Bass blaming them for not reducing pet overpopulation because they only increased the Animal Services Department's budget by 1.6%. Michelson claims the problem is that the city isn't providing enough money for spay neuter funding. He claims "The cause is fixable and well understood." If it were so easy, why wasn't he able to solve the problem himself as he promised 21 years ago? He goes on to say "I have spent the past two decades working to expand access, directing more than $15 million toward spay and neuter services in Los Angeles and investing over $31 million in the search for a safe, nonsurgical sterilant for cats."

Michelson stated not providing enough funds for spay neuter caused the following.  "Over the past six years, the City’s animal-related liability payouts increased 65-fold to over $7 million in 2025. Sanitation costs are in the millions and rising, with 31,000 dead animal pickups last year." The animal related liability payouts had to do with dog bites of employees in the shelter. The dead animals picked up include wildlife, indoor kept pets who died indoors, small farm animals and owned free roaming pets. They are not all the direct result of less spay neuter funding.

Michelson stated "the City continues to increase funding elsewhere, including a $160 million investment in policing in this year’s proposed budget." He should know by now that the City responds to the desires of the citizens who stated they care more about more police officers than a larger budget for Animal Services. The City responded to a city wide poll. It's not really up to the City or Mayor.

At the end of the Op-Ed is a pdf chart of LA Animal Services statistics for the last two years, see link below. The chart shows intake is up 1% and live outcome is down 5%. It shows more spay neuter coupons issued but fewer redeemed. The Department has the same problems it's had for years and a few new ones. Mayor Bass isn't responsible for the actions of previous Mayors and GMs of Animal Services over the last 20 years. Dr Gary Michelson knows about all these issues and said he would solve the problem once and for all back in 2005. He's now complaining that the City didn't solve the problem he said he could and would easily solve. 

I follow the Department closely and realize it's a huge problem to solve. I actually agree with most of what Michelson said in his Op-Ed about the many problems facing the Department of Animal Services and the City. It's just rich to see him complaining and blaming the City today for something he said he could easily fix back in 2005. These problems are sadly never as easy as some people believe.

Dr Gary Michelson still doesn't neuter his dogs. One of his current pitbulls is not neutered. Alya Michelson is parading the dog around in her online social media accounts. Do as I say and not as I do.

20% calcium chloride dihydrate in ethyl alcohol has been shown to be effective in neutering male cats and dogs. This chemical has been around many years. It's been known to permanently sterilize dogs for many years. People weren't using it because of a few reasons most of which had to do with money.

"A U.S. Northwest veterinarian and shelter have won the first "Timmy Prize" for data collection, submitting data on their experience using CalchlorinTM nonsurgical neuter injection to spare three feral cats surgery. The prize, offered by nonprofit Parsemus Foundation, is meant to encourage sharing and transparency of data on the neuter injection. Because the universally-available method is not patentable and there is very little profit potential, no company is sponsoring it or spreading data. "Market approaches can solve a lot, but in this case, we saw a need that wasn't being filled," said Elaine Lissner, executive director of the nonprofit foundation."

Dr Gary Michelson knew about this drug and others which right now will permanently sterilize cats and dogs. Gary Michelson could have used his money to probably sterilize most dogs in the US by now. Instead Gary Michelson wastes millions trying to invent something new so he can make even more money. It makes no sense. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Gary Michelson's "Prize" kills animals - ex-Forbes billionaire, crazy, Los Angeles, California

Dr Gary Michelson first offered his "Prize" in 2008. It was "Found Animals will offer a $25 million prize to the first entity to provide to the Foundation with a safe, effective, and practical non-surgical sterilant for use in cats and dogs." I sent him five drugs which do this. I'm sure many others did the same. He had no intention of ever awarding the "Prize" so he changed the rules in 2009. Every year since then he keeps changing the rules moving the goal posts farther and farther away until now they reach up into the clouds of impossibility. The drug must now be a "one shot/dose, permanent sterilant for both cats, dogs which is a new drug which he can patent for money." The winner of the Prize is up to Gary's sole discretion. Ifffffff Gary Michelson's true goal was to end pet over population and stop euthanasia in shelters, wouldn't he have awarded the Prize by now and been sterlizing all cats, dogs he could find? That would make sense but not for Gary. Gary likes to dangle money in front of people so they will like him, want to be his friend. He's like that sad joke "You so ugly your momma had to put bologna all over you just so the dog would play with you." The Prize is bologna which Gary has draped himself in. It Gary gives the dog the bologna, the dog will take it and run away to eat it leaving Gary all by himself.

Think about it this way. What if someone gave Gary a drug that would sterlize cats but not dogs. Let's say someone else gives him a drug that will sterilize dogs and not cats. Gary would say "eff you, losers!" to both of them. If Gary truly wanted cats and dogs to be sterilized, he could have split the prize in half giving half to each one and he could start sterilizing cats and dogs. He could have done this in 2008 if he really wanted to help animals because the drugs already exist. If I gave him five drugs, I'm sure there were more out there. That turns out to be the case.

I'm talking about Calcium Chloride, Chem-cast, Neutersol...and the others. We've had drugs for many years which will sterilize male cats and dogs with one shot. In fact if you were able to use an ultrasound, you could probably properly inject it into the ovaries of female animals. The key is placement of the needle.

All of these drugs are basically irritants. You inject anything irritating into the testicle or ovary (high saline content sterile liquid, lactic acid, calcium chloride...), it will damage cells, cause the body to kill the damaged cells, form scar tissue and now the animal is infertile. It also lowers the hormone levels to levels where they would not mark or go into heat.

So why doesn't Gary use his money to buy a lot of calcium chloride and start injecting animals? Because then no one will like him without his "Prize." Trust me, even with all his money people don't really like Gary. They just put up with him and only in exchange for money. He also wants to make even more money. He wants to make a drug to sell for profits. This drug already exists and is $1/dose. There's no money there for him. Fuck the animals! He didn't even neuter his own dog Bull!

Gary obviously does not care about animals at all. His Michelson Prize is a total sham. Michelson is a fraud. He reminds me of Dave Weisman, David Allen Weisman of the fake DAX Foundation which was a supposed $75 million dollar foundation that gave money to help animals, poor people and the arts. Dave used his fake foundation just to score with women. It was not a legal corporation or non-profit. The guy has nothing and has been arrested three times in the last two years for various offenses. He has lawsuits, liens, judgments against him, owes money right and left. His entire career has been a fraud. Check criminal and civil court documents in Pacer and California. He's ripped off many people.

Why hasn't anyone else used these cheap existing drugs to end pet over population? The veterinary industry does not want a cheap one shot alternative to spay and neuter surgery. They make MONEY performing surgery! It's just like Dyson's vacuum bag-less cleaner. The competition did not want to introduce a bag-less vacuum cleaner because they make money on the bags. I personally used to just empty the bags and re-attach them. I realized it was a waste. No one would buy Dyson's idea so he had to produce the vacuum cleaner himself. I love his invention especially the one with the wheel barrow wheel. That was revolutionary but his competition didn't want it. Now they all had to upgrade their vacuum cleaners and stop selling bags.

If you go to the website, there are instructions on how to make and use the drug to sterilize. This is meant for veterinarians. Please, spread the word about this drug. They really need it in India where they have dog over population and rabies.

February 2014 Found Animals Foundation released a press release stating they have approved  $15 million for Michelson Prize grants which would bring their grants to $18,000,000.  One, she said they merely approved $15 million. Based on Gary-speak and promises he never keeps this means Gary wants people to think he is spending this much money but he probably isn't. Last I looked they'd spent $3 million in seven years even though he promised $75 million, i.e. $25 million prize and $50 million in grants.

If Gary Michelson had spent $18,000,000 to buy existing sterilization drugs and start sterilizing animals back in 2007, he would have made a nice dent in overpopulation. Instead of gives money to whomever makes him feel good.

Aimee Gilbreath had this to say in the press release,

“While shelter intake has been decreasing nationally over the past five years, thanks in large part to heightened awareness of spay neuter, 90 percent of animals entering shelters are still unfixed. While we are beginning to see dividends from the investments we have made over the past six years, we know that there is still much work to be done to prevent unwanted litters from entering shelters,” continued Gilbreath.

This is misleading. I haven't checked intakes recently but a couple of years ago the majority of animals entering the shelter were neonate kittens. You can't spayneuter a cat until two pounds or eight weeks. Neonates are cats under eight weeks of age so it'd be impossible to spayneuter them. The second most common animal entering the shelter are feral cats. They are also not spayneutered. The third most common animal entering the shelter are homeless pits or unwanted dogs. They are generally not spayneutered.

Aimee Gilbreath makes it seem that 90% of all animals are not fixed. I would say the majority of owned pets in wealthy areas are fixed. Current unowned pets can't fix themselves. Only once owned animals who are dumped on the street might be fixed. Generally if people dump them they aren't fixed. My point is just her 90% figure is misleading.

Other companies beating Gary Michelson to chemical sterilization, Zeuterin

This drug was originally introduced before Gary Michelson came on the scene. It was called Neutersol but is now called Zeuterin. When originally sold as Neutersol the company did not train the veterinarians how to properly inject the animal. Some dogs has complications such as swollen testicles. The shot has to be precise. Neutersol went under but new company Zeuterin is here.

They have developed a better way to train veterinarians to give the shot properly. Again, Gary Michelson knew about this drug. We spoke about it when the company was floundering. It would have been a good idea for Gary Michelson to have bought the license or rights to the drug at that time but he didn't. Gary Michelson does not want to solve overpopulation. He wants to make money and get good press. He now admits that he only gives to groups that make him "feel good." Meanwhile other people are out there trying to solve the problem.

The article brings up an interesting point. Gary Michelson wants to make money. He wants a product he can patent, own and sell for profits and glory. He doesn't care about reducing overpopulation. If he did he would use one of the many already developed, patented, tested drugs to reduce overpopulation. The Michelson Prize was set up to give $25M for a one shot sterilant for male/female cats/dogs. This article notes that developing a drug to solve third world problems won't make you money. Veterinarians make money selling spay and neuter. They won't want to use the drug because they don't make as much money. This is something public shelters, rescuers, third world countries would want or some philanthropist who truly cares about animals. They won't pay $25M for it. This is another reason why Gary Michelson is not giving out the award.

The only way I could see someone willing to pay $25M for such a drug is if it can be used for pest control. There is definitely a market for humane pest control. By pest control I mean reducing number of say mice, rats, pigeons, ground squirrels, wild bunnies, gophers, moles, voles, bats, crows, starlings, house sparrows, deer.... unprotected nuisance wildlife. I believe a post or two ago I posted about a new sterilant they will be using with rats. Now that could be worth something.
