The only time the cost of books might be a factor is with public two year junior colleges. While the cost of the books is the same the tuition is much lower. Compared to public and private universities they are saving a lot of money on tuition. A two year degree won't help you land a better job. Only an undergrad degree at an accredited college or university can accomplish that. Dean Florez must have put this "problem" in Gary Michelson's head so Dean could "disrupt" then "fix" the non-existent problem because he termed out and really needs a job.

And again they can buy then resell used books or use the library edition. I did that in college even though I had a full scholarship. This way I was able to keep the savings.

Future of Internet is smart phones. Gary Michelson, 20 Million Minds

Just read this great article on the future of the Internet. Currently 1/3 of the world has a computer and Internet access. 2/3 of the world do not have computers or Internet access due to their remote locations but most (70% - 90%) do have cellular phones and cellular phone service. Right now the Internet is only reaching 1/3 of this world.

Gary Michelson said the future is computers and Internet access in third world countries. He's wrong. It will be smart phones on exiting cell phone services. Maybe 20 years after that they will have Internet access and computers. Right now cheap cell phone and cell service is the future for the Internet.

Google and others realize this and are trying to get Internet access to the other 2/3 of the world. Their goal is of course money from ad revenue, selling data and products. They want to make the Internet free, i.e. "zero." It will of course be paid for by ad revenue and items sold.

I think anyone offering free or cheap books should make sure their platform can be reached by all smart phones. Smart phones are getting cheaper. These people already have cellular phones. I'm sure a lot of our used smart phones are going to these places as we upgrade our phones. In fact I know this for a fact. Few minutes ago I got an email from a smart phone in Africa. They read my FREE manual on squirrel care and had a question. They emailed a photo from their smart phone saying they are in a remote place in Africa with no veterinarians whatsoever and their baby squirrel is ill. From the photo I was able to diagnose and give advice.

After the last few hurricanes Internet access and power were out. People found many orphaned babies and wildlife that needed care. I got a ton of phone calls and smart phone emails. They were charging their phones off their car as they had no power. You can't charge or power your desktop or laptop too easily in your car. During the last two power outages in my area I had to do the same for three days.

Another good reason to make sure all books and classes can be viewed by smart phones is so people can be home-schooled. In some countries females are not allowed to go to school. They can't have educational books. This way they can learn in their home in private. They also are not allowed to play sports or exercise. I'm talking about the middle east. There can be exercise classes in pdf format with embedded videos and images besides nutrition information. All of my free manuals can be read on smart phones.

Gary Michelson lies to Forbes editors about his wealth and spending

Forbes came out with their 2013 billionaires last week. Gary Michelson is included. Forbes asks these people what they are worth when they can. They just take the person's word for it. They don't try to verify anything. Their information is wrong. I will correct their info here.

1. "Through the Twenty Million Minds Foundation, he helps students get free textbooks."

He started the foundation but hasn't even really started funding it. I posted the 990 here. I think he spent $30,000. He hasn't given any free text books.

2. "He has also spent $10 million to convert municipal animal services from kill facilities to adoption centers and to provide free spaying and neutering services to low-income households."

According to the Found Animals Foundation's 990, he has spent $3-5M over the last seven years for animal related causes. He has not converted any municipal shelters from kill centers to adoption centers.  He has donated some money to spay and neuter pets of people with low income.

3. "Through his Found Animal Foundation, he created a $25 million-prize for medical inventors to come up with a nonsurgical method to sterilize dogs and cats to help reduce the number of strays. The foundation is now offering $50 million in grants to help fund promising research towards the prize."

Gary Michelson has offered the $25M and $50M but he hasn't funded the Foundation with that amount. He also has not awarded the prize to anyone and it's been seven years. The Foundation started in 2005. It's now 2013. He has spent maybe $3M tops on grants for research. His goal is to get a drug he can patent and sell for profits. His goal is not to sterilize animals. If it were, he would take existing drugs and do that right this second but he hasn't. And again, it's "Found AnimalS Foundation," plural.

If he really purchased that much space in Austin, Texas, that is not a good idea. While the area is attracting some large corporations, it's only because it was super cheap. If rents rise, they could leave. The only way Michelson can make a profit on capital investments is if rents rise. I hope he spreads out his real estate investments.
