I'd not heard the word "eponymous" before until someone was just talking about the Pritzker family. Seems they like to name buildings, charities, prizes after themselves as much as Gary Michelson does. The big difference of course is that Gary always says "I never name things after myself" while the Pritzkers admit that they name things after themselves. I guess when I started my non-profit I could have named it the "Mary Cummins Foundation" but that just sounds too weird. That's why our non-profit is "Animal Advocates."
The term "eponymous philanthropy" has a negative connotation and even denotation. You really have to be extremely insecure inside and have a big narcissist ego on the outside to want to name a charity after yourself. That means that your real goal is not the charity but attention to yourself. An even bigger sign of insecurity and need for attention is when you say "I Never name things after myself. USC wanted to name this building after me. It wasn't my idea. It would have been rude of me to turn them down." Yes, it was Gary's idea. In fact he paid $50,000,000 for the "idea" to be forced into his head. It's all detailed in his gift/bequest agreement.

Gary Michelson: "David came to me and said 'there's some folks down at USC who would like to talk to you about putting your name on a building.' And I said 'David, come on, we've been through that so many times. I have noooo interest.'"
People don't just offer to put people's names on buildings. They obviously were making a pledge proposal for the naming rights. Gary goes on to make up a story that he was jokingly hypnotized into naming the building after himself. He actually PAID $50,000,000 for the naming rights to the building. Gary says just two weeks before the January 2014 ground breaking he agreed to give the money. That means the building was planned to be built no matter what. USC just lied about the "focus" of the building to get Gary to give money.
