Dr. Gary Michelson donates $50,000,000 to USC for a new building named after him

I was just discussing with a friend how billionaires can be so cheap with little things ($40 cake) then have no problem donating $50M for a building in their name. Cut to this morning when I saw this in the LA Times. http://touch.latimes.com/#section/1780/article/p2p-78851255/ Dr. Gary Michelson just donated $50,000,000 to the University of Southern California for a new building which will house multi-field research. It will be called the "USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience."

Gary Michelson didn't even go to USC. He went to Temple University undergraduate and then Hahnemann Medical School which is now part of Drexel University. Gary Michelson didn't even intern or practice there. Let's see if he actually funds it. I would think USC would make him keep his promise. He can't get away with lying and saying he will spend $75M on pet sterility then not do it like he's done with his own foundations.

USC fund raising, major gifts department really know how to work billionaires to get huge donations. They research their target to find out what causes them to hand over the wallet. Here they tell Dr. Gary Michelson that they will have people from many fields working together to find things that will help people. That interdisciplinary approach “resonates with my life work,” he said. Instead of research for research’s sake, the aim will be for “research for humanity’s sake, goal oriented with results manifested in the real world,” he said." Resonates with his life's work? This actually resonates with his ego's desire to be thought of as a philanthropic person. His life's work is actually being a patent troll and thief to make money for himself. He is the main reason back surgery has gone from about $6,000 to $35,000 average. Most back surgeries which use his implants, screws are actually $160K to $200K with most of the money being spent on patented screws. They're just screws! If he really wanted to help people he'd let poor people use his screws for free.

In other news another "doctor" Dr. DRE donated $70,000,000 to USC. A rap star worth $580,000,000 ($580M) donates more than a doctor inventor worth $1,500,000,000 ($1.5B). Dr. DRE gave more than 10% of his total worth. Dr. Michelson gave 3%. Kudos to Dr. DRE. That is a generous man, also an extremely successful one.

Hope Dr. Gary Michelson got his $50,000,000 worth of advertising for his "philanthropy." Notice how Gary Michelson demanded they name the building after him. He also gave them the photo and a phone interview. In a few days he'll be lying and saying "USC demanded to name the building after me even though I said 'no.' I didn't want anyone to know that I made the donation because that would be unseemly and I'm not unseemly."
