2006 The Foundation spent $252,000 on microchips. This is just about equal to the amount Gary said his ex-partner embezzled. Notice in the tax return there is no write off for loss or theft, just chips. Gary gave $10,000 to the Wildlife Waystation. I would think he would do a little research about them and realize they were sued by USDA and lost. They lost their Fish & Game permit to exhibit. They still don't have it because of poor conditions. They are still in violation of LA County codes. Chimps self-injured themselves out of boredom. They lied and said they rehab wildlife when they don't. When they had to shut down the baby trailer, I took a few of their volunteers. 

2007 Gary gave $25,000 grant to attorney Karen Breslin to fight pitbull ban in colorado. This was a grant to file an objection to the ban in court. I think they lost. Gary also bought more chips. If they are such a bad idea, why does he keep buying more chips?

2008 Gary buys even more chips. He spends $240K on the Michelson Prize which is supposed to be $75,000,000. Aimee Gilbreath gets $116,000/year salary, much less than the previous Director.

2009 Gary spends $1.7M on the Michelson prize, still not $75,000,000. Gary spends $645K on chips. Gary is now the sole director of the organization. Sounds like he had a fear of being voted off the board and no longer in control of the money and everyone. You generally need at least three directors. It's very odd to only have one director. Aimee now gets $190K/yr plus $23K benefits.

2010 Aimee Gilbreath now gets $200K. Rabecca Cross the secretary now gets $164,000/year. Gary gave Daniel Guss of the Stand Foundation $31K. If Gary only knew the horrible things Dan said about Gary he wouldn't be giving him the time of day. Dan said he was a "stupid, idiot who doesn't know what he's doing." Dan hinted that Gary would be lost without him. Dan even told me that he, Dan basically calls the shots at the Foundation. Does Gary know Dan has a criminal record for stealing someone's dog? Gary has been doing background checks on his employees. He should check out some of his grant recipients. In 2010 Aimee sends out news that they approved $3.5 million in grants for the Prize. The tax returns only show $2M total by the end of 2010. I realize "approve" is different than "gave" but it's still misleading. I really think Gary enjoys dangling money in front of people and not giving it to them even when they've met the qualifications for the prize.

2011 Gary spends $3.1M on the Michelson prize. $1.1 M chips.

From 2005 to the present Gary has spent $5,000,000 on the $75,000,000 Michelson Prize. He offered the prize in 2008. It's been five years. How come no one has won the prize?

I was going through docs from 2010. I was talking to someone about the prize. This person said "I bet he will never award the prize to anyone. If he does award to anyone, he'll award it to himself." That person was right.

As always I will be posting the truth and public documents about public figure Dr. Gary Michelson. I asked him to retract his defamatory statement which he made under oath but he refused. It's one thing to have crazy bat lady defaming me. It's another to have someone whom I supported for years defaming me. He defamed me in 2008 and it's now 2013. I have been quiet about the truthful things I've known about him all this time giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I am bringing up campaign donations by Dr. Gary Michelson because he promised to give money to the City in exchange for the City hiring Ed Boks. From the lawsuit from the Director of Found Animals Foundation,

"Soon after settlement of the sexual harassment and racial discrimination lawsuits another lawsuit settlement became public. Dr. Gary Michelson was sued by the ex-Director of his Found Animals Foundation for fraud and defamation. A statement in that lawsuit was physical proof of Michelson's and Villaraigosa's illegal agreement to hire Boks in exchange for $10,000,000. Case Number: SC095697, David T. Loftus VS. Gary Karlin Michelson, M.D. Et. Al., Filing Date: 10/18/2007, Case Type: Contractural Fraud (General Jurisdiction), Status: Dismissed. This lawsuit was settled very quickly when this pay to play information came to light. This is from a sworn statement in that lawsuit.

"Michelson told Plaintiff that he had agreed to fund seven spay and neuter clinics and donate a million dollars to the city of Los Angeles as incentive for Ed Boks, a proponent of the "nokill" policy, to head the department of animal control. Plaintiff advised Michelson that a million dollars would not be enough money. Other animal welfare advocates agreed, and Michelson promised to donate $10,000 ,000 to implement a "nokill" policy in LA. Michelson promised city officials, including mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Deputy Mayor Jimmy Blackman, that if Ed Boks were to be hired as  head of the department of animal control, he would donate $10,000,000 to the department and millions more to animal welfare agencies and animal rescue groups."

Based on Gary's tax returns he did not keep his promise to the City. He did not give $10,000,000.  He hasn't even spent $10,000,000 through Found Animals Foundation since they were first formed. Gary Michelson does not keep his promises. He likes to make oral promises so he can later say "I never said that."

When I worked for the City and Ed Boks the Mayor's office kept saying "where is the money he promised?!" I kept defending Gary over and over. He promised money to other groups and also didn't keep those promises. Evidence of this is in sworn statements in the lawsuit against Gary Michelson. Gary Michelson makes promises then doesn't deliver.

I have a feeling the NEW Los Angeles County DA is only going after Neil Campbell and Philip Powers because Dr. Gary Michelson either donated, promised to donate, hinted at donating to the new DA. I have no proof yet but I'm researching this. (UPDATE: See the more recent blog post. He did indeed donate money to the DA a month before they went after his partners. Proof is in the post) Why would the DA go after these two people who are not even LA or CA residents when there was already a civil case heard and tried? Generally there is criminal THEN civil charges. I believe this means Dr. Gary Michelson tried to get the DA to go after them years ago but they said no, "it's a civil matter." Dr. Gary Michelson tried to get the LAPD to go after David T Loftus but they refused because there was no crime. This pissed Gary off to no end.

Dr. Gary Michelson sues his best friend Neil Campbell and Philip Powers

Dr. Gary Michelson was best friends with Neil D Campbell. They hung out together, vacationed together, lived the high life together. Neil Campbell did get Dr. Gary Michelson to invest in teak farms. Dr. Gary Michelson made a lot of money in the teak farms. Gary Michelson feels wronged for a personal reason and viciously turns on him. This is a recurring theme in Gary's life. If you are a female and refuse his advances, it can be even worse.

I personally feel Gary has some anger management issues. I once told him that a certain commissioner threw a water bottle at another commissioner in a commission meeting. I said that's why I suggest he not recommend her for a job. He said "what's wrong with that? I've thrown bottles at people before."

This is the case as I know it. I'm trying to find the legal docs but can't find them. Originally Gary went after his friend in civil court. I believe the protracted legal battle caused his friend to go bankrupt. He lost everything.

That was not good enough for Gary. He needs his pound of flesh. He supposedly used his influence, money and power to get the authorities to go after his friend for criminal fraud. In this case the deals were offshore and the teak farms were not in the US but Costa Rica. I'll try to find the docs. This case is very similar to Dave Loftus. Gary tried to get the police to charge and arrest Dave when Dave didn't commit a crime. Gary just found out that Dave would make a few pennies on the chips that he sold to Gary. Gary still paid a very low price for the microchips.

In this situation his friend was making money on teak farms. Gary asks to get involved to make money. He gets involved and makes money. Everyone is happy. His partner would tell him paraphrased "here's a teak farm for x number of dollars. Do you want to buy it?" Gary would say yes and the deal would happen.

Gary for example paid $75 for the farm that was worth $100. He instantly made money. He later found out that someone bought the farm for $72 and sold it to him for $75. Gary agreed to buy it at $75. The farm is now worth $150 and Gary has made even more money. Gary is upset that someone who is in the teak farm business made $3 on the deal. This is what the guy does for a living. He's a teak farm dealer. The teak dealer offers to buy back the farms for what Gary paid for them and Gary says no because Gary made a lot of money on the teak farms. Supposedly the teak farm dealer gave gifts to Gary's friend. This is what upset Gary besides a personal issue. Hell hath no fury like a Gary Michelson scorned. I didn't even do anything to upset him and he defames me while perjuring himself in court documents.

Gary also doesn't thoroughly investigate things before he gets involved. He didn't investigate Ed Boks at all. He believed everything he said. Gary didn't investigate TNR (trap neuter return) and supports it even though scientists and researchers have shown it does not work in the real world. Gary agreed to buy Loftus' chips and kiosks without doing any research. Gary should have asked how much are you paying for the chips? How much are you selling them to me? What is the wholesale cost of chips bought in high quantities? Please, show me physical proof that chips and kiosks are cost effective in saving animals. He didn't ask any of these questions. He just handed his checkbook to Dave. I'm not saying Gary has to micromanage all of his investments and finances. He just needs to have a little over sight. It's probably a good thing Gary is not on the Internet. He'd probably get taken by the Nigerian scams daily.

These are but a few examples of how Gary ends up in these situations. When Gary realizes HE may have made a poor decision, didn't do his due diligence before signing a deal, didn't get every penny in a deal, he tries to blame and destroy the other person. Gary agreed to buy chips, kiosks, hire Boks, buy teak farms....then regretted these things. He takes his anger out on the other person. His brown noser employees, moochy friends of course support him and his crazy notion that his poor decision is the fault of others. "You should sue them! They should be in jail! Can I have a $50,000 grant?" He claims he was ripped off when he went into all of these deals on his own free will with his eyes wide open. I will post the legal docs as soon as I find them. Please, note that pro-Gary articles about this case are in small local magazines or the LA Business Journal. If you know anything about small local magazines and the LA Business Journal, their "editorials" are almost ads or favors to wealthy people. NY Times, LA Times, CNN haven't picked up this story.

Their Nevada corporation C & M Investment Group was formed 10/2007. It dissolved 12/6/10. I believe that's different than the date in the documents. Karlin Holdings Limited Partnership is still current, filed 1995. Karlin Asset Management Inc a California Corp is the general partner.

Spine surgeon and inventor Gary Michelson attained billionaire status five years ago after his successful lawsuit against a company that shortchanged him on licensing his surgical devices. Now he is heading back to court. This time he?s in a fight with a former best friend he alleges ripped him off over their investments in Costa Rican teak forests.

Michelson, a Brentwood resident, has become known for his charitable contributions and for living fairly modestly. He has three rescue dogs and drives a PT Cruiser.

Meanwhile, he accuses his former friend and a partner of diverting the teak money toward such things as superdeluxe cars, including a classic Corvette and a vintage Lancia.

Michelson?s attorney, Luke Dauchot, is asking the court to set a summer trial date for the suit, which was filed in 2007. Dauchot also represented Michelson in the licensing battle that netted him $1.35 billion in 2005.

?Wealthy people are often tempting targets for fraud,? said Dauchot, a partner in the downtown L.A. office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. ?But I think it takes on an added level when you consider that this came from someone whom he considered to be certainly one of his best friends. There is that emotional component to it.?

Even before his landmark legal victory, Michelson was investing in Costa Rican teak farms with the goal of sustainable harvesting of the valuable hardwood. Over the years, he put in $32 million, according to the suit. The defendants claim the assets are still valuable, even in the down market. Michelson is seeking at least $20 million in damages.

He claims his friend, Neil Campbell, and a Costa Rica partner, Phillip Richard Powers, looted his money through a kickback scheme, and Powers stole from the partnership to buy pricey cars for himself and Campbell.

The suit states that Powers spent at least $1.2 million on exotic and vintage cars, including a McLaren Formula One car, a 1958 Corvette and a 1958 Lancia Aurelia.

In response to a pretrial request by Michelson?s attorneys, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled Feb. 4 that Campbell breached his fiduciary duty to Michelson when he received kickbacks from Powers in the form of jewelry, furnishings, exotic cars and $1.2 million in cash. The judge granted Michelson $1.5 million in damages, which he is trying to recoup by asking a Florida federal court to impose a lien on Campbell?s $1.9 million home in Sarasota, Fla.

Michelson declined to comment for this article, referring questions to his attorney, Dauchot.
But in a 2007 interview with the Business Journal, Michelson gave some indication that he was having problems with people and money.

?I?ve been burned a couple times,? he said. ?I got lied to because I wasn?t scrutinizing enough. That?s when I realized I needed to hire staff.?

Dauchot wouldn?t confirm that the quote referenced the teak farm problem, but said he wouldn?t be uncomfortable seeing it in this article.

An attorney for Campbell did not return requests for comment, and attorneys for Powers declined to comment.

Powers, who is a U.S. citizen but has lived in Costa Rica since 1992, claims in court documents that he struck a deal with Michelson and Campbell that called for him to locate and acquire properties suitable for teak farming, and then maintain the farms. Powers also claims that Michelson and Campbell were free to accept or reject his offers to invest in the properties.

Michelson?s wealth is largely derived from the $1.35 billion settlement with medical device manufacturer Medtronic Inc., which helped him rank No. 23 on the Business Journal?s 2009 list of Wealthiest Angelenos with an estimated net worth of $1.44 billion. The hefty settlement involved patents for spinal devices that Michelson invented that make surgery easier and help patients heal better.
Medtronic had sued him for selling the devices to a competitor. He countersued, alleging the Minneapolis company had underpaid him. Michelson won a $510 million jury trial, and later got a settlement for even more money.

Teak farming time

According to legal documents, Campbell first suggested to Michelson in 1998 that the two invest $1 million together in a thousand-acre Costa Rican teak farm through one of Campbell?s friends, Powers. Campbell introduced Powers to Michelson at that time, while the three were vacationing near Castaic Lake.

When Campbell revived the talks in 1999, Michelson agreed and the two formed C&M Investment Group Ltd.; ?C? for Campbell and ?M? for Michelson.

At the time, Michelson considered Campbell one of his best friends ? the two attended each other?s weddings and often went on ski trips or other vacations together.

Campbell recommended that Michelson entrust the acquisition and operation of the farms to Powers, saying he was ?highly qualified to manage teak farms.? Powers allegedly promised 25 percent to 30 percent annual return on investment.

Michelson claims that over the next seven years, Powers would find properties ideal for teak farming, negotiate the price for the property and then advise C&M on the purchase price.

Michelson alleges Powers was entitled to as much as 6 percent commission on land sales. However, Powers claims there was no talk of commission, and that he was paid by including a markup in the sales price of the properties.

Michelson, however, alleges that one such markup was 870 percent.
In any case, Powers points out that ?C&M was free to accept or reject the proposed purchase price of each property ? and C&M also was free to terminate pending acquisitions if it thought the price was too high.?

Over those years, Powers purchased more than 147 properties in Costa Rica for C&M. The total was more than 23,000 acres ? 17,400 football fields, or about 35 square miles ? which would be about six times the size of Griffith Park.

Michelson claims he began asking Powers for records detailing how C&M?s money was being spent, including the actual purchase prices of the properties and Powers? fees. However, Michelson alleges that Powers refused to disclose any records and claimed that there was no evidence of how he paid for the properties because he had paid for them in cash.

Fraud uncovered

Once the suit was filed, Michelsons legal team began investigating Powers activities in Costa Rica. As a result, his attorneys uncovered a fraud on an even wider and more pernicious scale than originally understood, according to subsequent filings.

Michelson alleges that bank records show Campbell received regular kickbacks from Powers in exchange for providing false reassurances to Michelson about the value of the land purchases and the legitimacy of Powers transactions. After discovering the alleged kickbacks, Michelson expanded the suit against Powers to include Campbell as a defendant.

Michelson alleges that Powers and Campbell systematically asked him to wire millions of dollars for fictitious operational expenses and instead used the money for their own personal gain, including the purchase of exotic and vintage cars.

The suit details the car purchases:
? In April 2005, Powers wired $100,000 to Maranello Motorsports, a Ferrari dealer in Australia.
? In May 2005, $65,230 was sent to Ed Lepelis, a New Jersey Corvette restorer, for a 1958 Corvette for Campbell.
? In May 2005, $450,000 was sent to McLaren Cars Ltd. for undetermined transactions.
? In May 2005, Powers allegedly sent $122,000 to an auction house in Monaco for a 1958 Lancia Aurelia, which he imported to Costa Rica in July 2005.
? In August 2005, $80,000 was allegedly sent to Scott Gibbons for a 1960 Ferrari 250 PF Cabriolet, and an additional $100,000 was sent to Gibbons the following month for the same car.

However, Powers claims in court documents that the ensuing litigation merely reflects Dr. Michelsons incredible avarice.

Michelsons attorney, Dauchot, said the case isnt about wealth or greed. He said Michelson is acting on principle; the $20 million sought represents a small percentage of Michelsons wealth. The case, he added, is based on Michelsons belief that he was betrayed by friends.

There is a sadness to this story,Dauchot said. If you look at the relationship between Gary Michelson and Neil Campbell, they were very good friends. These two individuals spent a lot of time together. They water-skied together.

It would have been nice if the writer took a look at the actual lawsuit. Michelson made money in all of the tree farm transactions. No one looted any money from him. This is Michelson's MO. Today's trial update Gary Michelson criminal case, Forbes, billionaire, eccentric pathological liar

Trial began at 1:30 p.m. with five counts of "Grand Theft".  The D.A. started off his with opening statement with a power point presentation.  He outlined the issues talking about trust and theft.  The defense was next slamming all of the D.A.'s presentation and preparing the audience for what they can expect to hear from the alleged victim.  He outlined the relationship between the D.A. and the alleged victim then he presented the evidence that the defense actually tried to reconcile the relationship after they were sued by offering to buy back the properties for a premium.

The alleged victim was next and began his testimony pretty much as the defense lawyer predicted he would.  Court will resume at 10:30 AM continuing with the alleged victims statements.

Dean Florez did not "term out" of office. He was pushed out because of ethics violations, largest fine in California history

Thanks to whomever sent this in. I obviously did not research Dean Florez, Dean Raymond Florez but I most certainly will now. I thought it odd that Dean would work for Gary but I now I know why. Dean was not termed out of office as he says on video. He was pushed out. There is no way he would ever be elected to office again with this huge ethics violation. I doubt he could have gotten a job anywhere with any company with his horrible unethical thieving lying past. This also shows that Dean Florez is into money and things that money can buy. I bet that he's probably using 20 Million Minds credit card to buy personal items. I should probably take a look at the other members of Gary Michelson's teams. Maybe they are all rejects. I did notice that he likes to hire people with education but either little experience or they are leaving another field unsuccessfully. Gary should invest his money with Buffett but instead invests with younger educated people with no experience or positive track record, i.e. David Cohen. Plus, it takes a certain mindset to be willing to work for billionaire super eccentric Gary Michelson. I will dig up the underlying documents here and post them.

SACRAMENTO -- Former California Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez faces record fines for campaign violations that include using $26,541 in political funds for his personal benefit to buy furniture, concert tickets, fireworks, satellite radio, travel, expensive dinners and gasoline.

Florez, a Democrat who represented a San Joaquin Valley district until 2010, has agreed to pay $60,000 in fines, according to documents released Monday by the state Fair Political Practices Commission.

The ethics agency found that Florez made 168 personal purchases from campaign committees he set up for an abandoned 2010 run for lieutenant governor and a 2014 candidacy for state controller.

The penalty is “the largest fine in California history” involving personal use of campaign funds, according to Gary Winuk, chief of enforcement for the FPPC.

In all, Florez admitted to 12 counts of violating campaign rules, including failure to return $247,000 he had raised for his lieutenant governor campaign after he abandoned it three months before the June 2010 primary.

“The failure by a candidate to refund contributions meant for a campaign that the candidate never participated in is a serious violation of the act, as it undermines the public’s trust that their contributions will be used appropriately,” said a report by the FPPC staff.

The commission is scheduled to meet Nov. 14 to consider the penalty agreed to between Florez and the FPPC enforcement staff.

Florez, an investment banker before his election, spent $6,700 in campaign funds on gasoline for personal driving as well as on purchases at Ikea, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Beck’s Furniture and Bed Bath & Beyond determined not to be legitimate campaign expenses, the FPPC report said.

The report does not identify which travel was deemed personal, but during the period investigated, Florez tapped his campaigns for trips to Chicago, New York, Houston, Santa Monica, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C.

He also spent money on a yearlong subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, monthly parking passes, a golf shirt and Internet, cable TV and phone bills unrelated to his campaign, the report said.

This article states he knew what he was doing was illegal. He didn't return $247K in donations. He spent $27K of donations on 168 personal items. $50K of the $60K fine, the largest in the history of California, came from his own pocket. He had his campaign fund pay the rest.  Florez had this to say "Florez, in an email to The Californian Monday, acknowledged his mistakes and said they came because he misunderstood the rules governing the use of campaign funds." I'm not a politician but I know that campaign contributions cannot be spent on private ski vacations, a golf shirt, expensive meals, private jets... Florez was an investment banker, Harvard business school graduate, political science major at UCLA. Many commenters on the many articles all said he should have been sent to prison. Here in Cali if you stead $400 or more, it's considered grant theft and you go to jail. Dean Florez stole $247K and $27K. He didn't return any of the money he stole. He paid a fine to the committee that oversees campaign contributions. This is not even the first time he's been fined. He has previous fines. I will bet he's using 20 MM credit cards for personal purchases.He ass kisses Gary, pays people to write nice articles about him, says 20 MM is really needed, is helping a lot, just so he can milk money out of Gary for a job. What is really ironic is he pretends to be the grandson of a produce picker from Mexico. His family has been in the US two generations more than mine. He says his grandfather and grandmother were farm laborers but that's not true. In the census they list different jobs. They also list different jobs in old directories. His grandmother did not work according to the census. Did she work and not pay taxes or did she just not work? Hard to believe anything politicians say.

I'm sure he was probably squeezing every penny he could get out of the state. I did notice that he used his contacts with Governor Brown to meet with him to discuss 20 MM. I'm sure he did that to try to make 20 MM seem like a legitimate cause or organization. He's also trying to rationalize his usefulness to Gary Michelson.

Dean Florez failed to return $247K in campaign contributions. He instead put the money into another fund then spent it all. Gary Michelson said he did background checks on all his employees. He obviously didn't research this thief, embezzler, liar, someone who committed perjury. He went to UCLA and Harvard. He was a politician for many years. He said he just didn't know how campaign finance worked. He admitted he used a campaign credit card to pay for a private jet so he could go skiing with his family. Dean Florez admits to 11 counts of using campaign funds for personal purchases. He is fined $5K per each count.
"In the Matter of Dean Florez, Dean Florez for Lt. Governor 2010, and Dean Florez for
State Controller 2014, FPPC No.12/213: Respondent Dean Florez spent $26,541.80 in
campaign funds from two candidate-controlled committees to purchase personal items
not related to a governmental, legislative, or political purposes. On November 14, 2013,
the Commission approved a stipulated decision wereby Florez admitted to eleven counts
of personal use of campaign funds and agreed to pay a penalty of $5,000 per count."

Misuse of Campaign Funds
Following a Franchise Tax Board audit and subsequent
investigation by the FPPC, the Enforcement Division
discovered former Senate Majority Leader Dean
Florez improperly made 168 purchases using funds
from campaign committees he had initiated for a 2010
campaign for Lieutenant Governor and a 2014 race
for State Controller. After failing to refund $247,000 in
donations from his abandoned Lieutenant Governor
campaign, Florez utilized campaign funds to purchase
personal items including gasoline, furniture, utility bills,
dog food, and airline tickets, totaling $6,434.42. For
failure to refund donations from a campaign and for
the improper use of committee funds, Dean Florez
was fined $60,000, the largest fine ever levied for
improperly using campaign money.

It's incredibly ironic than Dean Florez says he's against corruption, unethical behavior but he got the largest fine for unethical, corrupt behavior in the history of the state. I think this is similar to all those anti-homosexual politicians actually being homosexual and picking up tricks in airport bathrooms.
